Imports of Steel & Aluminum Duty Rate Increase

Imports of Steel & Aluminum Duty Rate Increase

The duty rate increase will take effect at midnight on March 23, 2018 for all imports or warehouse withdrawals.

Specifically, the tariff rate for steel will increase to 25% and the tariff rate for aluminum will increase to 10% for all goods classified under the sections listed below:

Goods made of steel and classified under HTSUS subheadings

7206.10 – 7216.50
7216.99 – 7301.10
7302.40 – 7302.90
7304.10 – 7306.90
Goods made of aluminum and classified under HTSUS subheadings

7604 – 7609
Currently, only steel and aluminum articles from Canada and Mexico are exempt from the tariff increases outlined above. The legislation has allowed for various countries and organizations affected by the proclamation to request an exemption but the procedures on how to request the exemption have not yet been published. The Secretary of Commerce is responsible for outlining the procedures and is expected to do so within 10 days of the signed proclamations (March 18, 2018).

Additionally, TransGroup will make all efforts to ensure entries leading up to March 23rd are pre-cleared and filed in a timely manner as allowed by 19 CFR 141.68. Therefore, it is important that all pre-alerts and commercial documents are submitted to the corresponding TransGroup station in a timely manner.

For importers of aluminum and steel, this will have a large impact on their daily operations. It is important that you remain informed on this topic and address with all layers of the organization. As additional details are made available, we will continue to provide updates.
