ILWU/PMA Contract Expired but Talks Remain Positive

Mixed news stories surround the ILWU/PMA contract negotiation as the contract has now expired. There has been no resolution, however several reports indicate that both sides of the contract negotiation feel positive a resolution is soon approaching, and so far there has been no indication that labor unrest will ensue. This is not to say there are clear skies ahead as history has proven a strike could still be declared at any time.

As of Monday, June 30th, the Pacific Coast Council said the evidence is “not enough to cause the carriers to impose the $1,000 congestion surcharges that they have filed at the Federal Maritime Commission.” Estimates put the signed contract agreement around mid-July, however this is only speculation.

The freight forwarding community continues to follow this story as we await the outcome. Meanwhile TransGroup is still reminding shippers of the possible work stoppage along West Coast Ports and will continue to offer alternatives. Typical slow downs surrounding the July 4th holiday weekend are expected, but nothing out of the ordinary reports say. TransGroup will send updates as they become available. If you have any questions regarding the ILWU/PMA labor negotiations, and how it will affect your supply chain, please contact your local TransGroup station.
